Billions being spent on Qatar World Cup

El-Emadi also said that the country would deliver all requirements for the World Cup on time and that all infrastructure works would be completed by 2022.

Russian Federation has meanwhile increased government spending on the 2018 event by $321 million to $10.7 billion (about N5.35 trillion).

The $500 million Qatar is spending each week is going to infrastructure projects, according to the finance minister.

To put that into perspective, Qatar is looking at spending $200 billion by the time the tournament kicks off, which is 19 times more than Russian Federation is projected to spend ($10.7 billion) and 18 times more than Brazil spent ($11 billion). For example Brazil spent over $11 billion Dollars for the 2014 World Cup, while Russian Federation is on pace to spend more than $10 billion USD for 2018′s event.

About 90 per cent of Fifa World Cup projects in all sectors have been awarded and are expected to be executed within the schedule, reported The Peninsula, citing the Prime Minister and Interior Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani.

As things stand in qualifying, they are the ninth best team in Asia, a confederation that receives 4.5 places at the World Cup.

In order to achieve this, contractors have brought in hundreds of thousands of migrant workers, mainly from South Asian nations.

In 2016, Amnesty raised the alarm about conditions for workers refurbishing the stadium, and accused Qatar of using forced labour and putting profit before safety.

The Qatari government has denied the report.

Last year, Qatar had an estimated budget deficit of more than $12.8bn, and the 2017 budget has a projected deficit of $7.8bn.

Emadi said the money for the World Cup projects had been protected from cuts to the national budget caused by low oil and gas prices.

The pressure on the state finances is now easing because of higher oil prices, and Emadi said Qatar might not need to issue global bonds this year.
