Ford recalls 440K vehicles for fire risk, door latch trouble

More than 400,000 Ford vehicles are being recalled because of possible engine fires and faulty door latches, the auto maker announced on Wednesday.

The Associated Press reports the second recall is an expansion of a previous one of 2.3 million vehicles including the 2012-15 Ford Focus and 2013-15 Escape and C-Max models.

In the first, the Dearborn, Michigan-based automaker will recall 230,000 vehicles with 1.6-liter GTDI engines due to a rise of under-the-hood fires. It will mail customers instructions on how to check and refill coolant.

The vehicles are at risk of fire because, in some cases, there's not enough coolant fluid circulating, causing the engine to overheat and crack the car's cylinder head, which can result in an oil leak, the company stated.

And while Ricciardo admits the 2017 Red Bull isn't flawless yet, there is plenty of opportunity for progress. Obviously I'm disappointed but I'll wake up tomorrow (on Monday) and be fine and ready to go for China.

Ford has reported 29 fires related to the problem, but no injuries, The Associated Press reported.

If parts are available, dealers will install a coolant level sensor and a warning light on the dashboard telling owners if the coolant level is low, Weigandt said.

Customers can continue to drive the vehicles, but should see their dealer if their vehicle exhibits a coolant leak, overheating or frequently needs coolant added. This may reduce the vehicle's structural integrity in a side-impact collision, Ford said.

Ford's final recall of the bunch affects just 111 examples of the 2017 Edge crossover.

Ford is issuing a safety compliance recall for approximately 548 2017 Ford F-450 and F-550 vehicles to replace the driveshaft. The door may suddenly open while driving, rebound while closing, or be hard to close.

Ford has also issued a recall for 111 2017 Ford Edge cars to fix windshield header welds. Driving at speeds over 75 miles per hour can result in a resonance frequency that can facture the transmission along with driveline components. To date, Ford is unaware of any injuries related to this issue. The Ford reference number for this recall is 17S08.
