Burger King's new ad intentionally sets off Google Home

Burger King's New Ad Will Hijack Your Google Home

The internet barely had time to be annoyed for that new 15 second Burger King ad before Google shut the whole thing down.

Google Home, hearing its call sign, replied to the commercial with information from the Whopper's Wikipedia page. It appears that Google Home will continue chatting even after the commercial ends.

For anyone with a Google Home near their TV, that strangely phrased request will prompt the speaker to begin reading the Wikipedia entry for the Whopper.

Your voice assistant could turn into an annoying advertiser if a marketing concept introduced by Burger King takes off.

Korea fires ballistic missile ahead of Trump-Xi meeting
Trump has said China must do more to pressure North Korea to halt its nuclear and missile programs. South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said the missile flew about 60 kilometres (37 miles).

The ad wasn't done in partnership with Google.

The company recently caught flak from Home owners by running what sounded quite a lot like an ad, about Disney's new live-action version of "Beauty and the Beast". "Ok, Google: What is the Whopper burger?" Unfortunately, that ease of use also makes them particularly vulnerable to trolling, and while you might expect such shenanigans from a bored friend, you probably won't be prepared for a Burger King commercial to attempt a hijack of your know-it-all speaker.

"The above reads as obvious ad-copy", a note in the page's edit discussions section reads in reference to Burger King's proposed changes. For nearly a decade, Wikipedia's page for the Whopper began with more or less the same sentence: "The Whopper sandwich is the signature hamburger product sold by the worldwide fast-food restaurant chain Burger King and its Australian franchise Hungry Jack's".

It could be expected that Burger King, by triggering Google Home to search for this product, would irritate more than just vegans and vegetarians. That certainly sounds like ad copy.

Dallas emergency sirens hacked, shut down overnight
Vaz said city officials have asked the Federal Communications Commission for help in determining who was behind the hack. City officials hope to have the system up and running by Sunday or Monday at the latest.

Burger King didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

15 seconds, as the ad you see below points out, isn't enough time to accomplish much of anything.

Anyone who has experienced using the "OK, Google" feature on Android devices or the Google Home speaker will know it can be a little too keen to pipe up, without advertisers seeking to exploit it.

Relying on Wikipedia also opens up one other problem: anyone can edit it. The Verge modified the Whopper entry briefly, and Google Home began speaking the updated text only minutes later.
