Kerala man among 36 IS men killed in United States bombing in Afghanistan

A ministry of defence official had said on Friday that the number of dead could rise as officials assessed the bomb site in Achin district.

Thursday's strike killed 36 Islamic State militants, according to the Afghan Ministry of Defense.

The commander of the US forces in Afghanistan, General John Nicholson, defended the use of the bomb and confirmed the target of the strike was the network of tunnels that ISIS fighters use to move around and protect themselves from Afghan and USA forces.

USA military officials claim the bomb would feel like a nuclear blast to anyone in the area.

The 30-foot-long GPS-guided "smart bomb", developed during the second Gulf War in 2003, has enough destructive force to wipe out an area roughly the size of nine city blocks.

But use of the bomb, which was developed in 2003, is a clear manifestation that new U.S. administration intends to rely heavily on use of its military might in Afghanistan, dealing a severe blow to prospects of peaceful resolution of the conflict, which is becoming complicated with the passage of time due to obstinate behaviour of the USA and Kabul Government. President Donald Trump called Thursday's operation a "very, very successful mission".

"It was the right time to use it tactically against the right target on the battlefield". He accused the United States of using Afghanistan as a testing ground for new ordnance.

The strike was created to minimize the risk to Afghan and U.S. forces conducting clearing operations, while maximizing the destruction of ISIS fighters and facilities, said the U.S. Forces-Afghanistan, which is part of the NATO-led Resolute Support.

Former Afghan president Hamid Karzi condemned the attack, calling it was "brutal and inhuman".

White House officials won't detail precisely when that visit will take place but say it will come "soon".

This was the moment U.S. forces dropped the MOAB - the "Mother of All Bombs" - on an Islamic State (IS) target in Afghanistan.

Residents in Afghan villages near the target area felt Thursday's powerful strike.

A local resident living around two kilometers (1.5 miles) from the blast told CNN he heard an "extremely loud boom that smashed the windows of our house". That raises some questions about why Afghanistan was chosen for the first use of the 10,000-kilogram MOAB, known informally as "the mother of all bombs".

Rob O'Neill, the man who killed Usama bin Laden, said those who are questioning the use of the 21,000-pound ordnance are missing the bigger point. America has concentrated on fighting them while also supporting Afghan forces against the Taliban.

'No civilian has been hurt and only the base, which Daesh used to launch attacks in other parts of the province, was destroyed, ' Waziri said in a statement. The rocky landscape is dotted with caves and defensive tunnels, making it easy to hold and hard to attack, according to Nic Robertson, CNN's global diplomatic editor, who has reported from the Afghan mountains.
