Measure for public funding for MLS stadium defeated in St. Louis

This is a mock-up of what the new riverfront stadium with a professional soccer team

Funding for the proposed stadium in St. Louis has been blocked by city voters.

Waiting for San Diego to vote on November 7 would push the decision toward the end of that timeline, though MLS spokesman Dan Courtemanche told the Union-Tribune on Tuesday that the league still plans on announcing its next two expansion teams by December 31.

Citizens in St. Louis voted down a resolution to fund a new soccer stadium on Tuesday night, striking a blow to the city's chances of receiving an MLS expansion team. The group needs 71,646 signatures verified by the Registrar of Voters by June for the "SoccerCity" proposal that calls for the construction of a $200 million soccer stadium as part of a $1 billion redevelopment at the 166-acre site in Mission Valley.

USA auto sales fall 1.6% in March as industry cools
General Motors sales climbed 1.6 percent, a smaller gain than analysts projected, while Honda reported a surprise drop. Sales of sport-utility vehicles, crossovers and pickup trucks increased 5.5% to 117,521, reflecting a record March.

Public funding for an MLS stadium in St. Louis is dead.

It appears St. Louis will, for now, remain a two-sport city. SC STL, the group hoping to bring an MLS team to the city, agreed to invest $95 million in the project and cover the league's $150 million expansion fee. The league is expected to award two expansion franchises this fall, both of which would begin play in 2020.

Mike Stone, the lead partner in Goal SD, says the group wants the voters to have the final say on what happens to the Qualcomm site. Unlike most cities, St. Louis is independent of any county, meaning that the costs would be incumbent only on St. Louis proper, leaving the suburbs completely free of responsibility should tax funds not meet projections.

MLS released a statement late Tuesday calling the vote "a significant setback for the city's expansion opportunity and a loss for the community".

The land became available when the Chargers announced their plans to move to Los Angeles.
