Thousands fail background checks for Uber, Lyft

Trump Taps Lyft Executive For Big PostMore

A federal judge Tuesday stopped Seattle from implementing a law allowing Uber and Lyft drivers to unionize, and granted the Chamber of Commerce a temporary injunction against it.

The law, which was passed in 2015, was challenged by two lawsuits.

U.S. District Judge Robert Lasnik's temporary restraining order was in response to a request by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce filed last month.

Measure for public funding for MLS stadium defeated in St. Louis
The league is expected to award two expansion franchises this fall, both of which would begin play in 2020. Louis proper, leaving the suburbs completely free of responsibility should tax funds not meet projections.

The chamber sued to block the law before this week's deadline for the companies to provide information about their most active drivers to the Teamsters union, launching the first step to unionization.

The Chamber contends that federal law on collective bargaining overrules the city's ordinance, and thus the law should be invalidated.

Gearhart: "We're disappointed with the fact that the companies would rather take the City of Seattle to court than sit down and negotiate with their drivers and start improving their working conditions". The presiding judge stressed that the "Order should not be read as a harbinger of what the ultimate decision in this case will be" when all motions have been fully considered.

USA auto sales fall 1.6% in March as industry cools
General Motors sales climbed 1.6 percent, a smaller gain than analysts projected, while Honda reported a surprise drop. Sales of sport-utility vehicles, crossovers and pickup trucks increased 5.5% to 117,521, reflecting a record March.

"Although there is no trade secret protections or confidentiality attached to this basic identifying information, the Court finds that forcing the driver coordinators to disclose their most active and productive drivers is likely to cause competitive injury that can not be repaired once the lists are released", Lasnik wrote.

Lasnik said the chamber had raised "serious questions that deserve careful, rigorous judicial attention, not a fast-tracked rush to judgment based on a date that has no extrinsic importance". City attorneys argue that independent contractors are more akin to the first three than supervisors and the city has the authority to permit them to unionize.

Uber and Lyft, along with 10 other cab-hailing companies, have been lobbying and conducting campaigns to persuade their drivers to vote against the union. They said it would stifle growth of the on-demand economy. The law followed a successful bid in 2014 to increase Seattle's minimum wage to $15 per hour. "We were going to see how we could restore that".
