US stock indexes mostly down in afternoon trading; oil rises

The tech-heavy Nasdaq closed short of another record Friday while the Dow industrials and S&P 500 finished lower, but all three finished higher for the week and the quarter. Based on this, the Dow could end up the week with a gain of around 0.6 percent in the current week. On the economic front, personal income for February matched estimates, at 0.4% growth, while consumer spending just missed predictions, climbing 0.1%. Financials stocks led the decline, falling 0.7%. Eastern Time. The Standard & Poor's 500 index was little changed at 2,368. The Nasdaq fell 2.61 points to 5,911.74. The Russell 2000 index picked up 3.57 points, or 0.3 per cent, to 1,385.92.

The S&P is on track to gain 5.7 percent and the Dow 4.7 percent for the quarter ending Friday, their biggest first-quarter gains since 2013. Meanwhile, an inflation gauge closely watched by the Federal Reserve increased 2.1 percent in February compared with a year ago, a five-year high.

DASHED EXPECTATIONS: NantHealth slumped 5.7 per cent after the health care information technology company reported disappointing fourth-quarter revenue.

-Yields on 10-year Treasuries climbed four basis points to 2.42 percent.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) spent the entire session trading lower, weighed down by a sharp decline for energy stock Exxon Mobil - even as oil prices recovered from earlier losses.

In currency trading, the euro weakened to $1.0684 from $1.0691 on Thursday.
