79 now believed to have died in London high-rise fire

Seventy-nine people are dead or missing and presumed dead following a devastating blaze in a London high-rise building last week, police said on Monday, as Britain held a minute's silence for the victims.

Greg Hands told Sky News that "my understanding is that the cladding that was reported was not in accordance with United Kingdom building regulations". Authorities are trying to determine if any criminal offenses were made by the building's managers, with accounts from residents indicating that it was for years a fire trap. "Sadly, at this time there are 58 people who we have been told were in the Grenfell Tower on the night that are missing, and therefore sadly, I have to assume that they are dead", he said.

Late Sunday, the Metropolitan Police released three photos from inside Grenfell Tower, which showed in close detail how the fire charred the building that once housed up to 600 people in 120 apartments.

As fire brigade worked to clear up debris inside the building, a nearby railway track which lies in the shadow of the tower block was closed, affecting the Circle and Hammersmith and City line.

British health authorities will also provide long-term bereavement counselling for those who lost loved ones in the tragedy.

While emergency services have been widely praised for their handling of the disaster, the government has been criticised for a slow and inadequate response, with Prime Minister Theresa May facing public anger for failing to meet residents during her first visit to the site.

Survivors of the Grenfell Tower fire are being given just £10 to live on by the local council, despite millions of pounds of donations to relief funds, a volunteer has said. Counsellors are already working with 52 families.
