Hawaii Rebuffs Trump, Adopts Paris Agreement Goals Anyway

Hawaii county representatives and mayors like Honolulu's Kirk Caldwell also signed a statement declaring their commitment toward the agreement.

The mayors of Pittsburgh and Paris have united in voicing their support for the Paris Agreement after President Donald Trump invoked the two cities while discussing his reasons for pulling out of the accord. According to the statement, those who have opted in and signed the pledge to continue involvement in the Paris Agreement, "all understand the agreement is a blueprint for job creation, stability and global prosperity and that accelerating the United States' clean energy transition is an opportunity - not a liability - to create jobs, spur innovation, promote trade and ensure American competitiveness".

Tin Ponlok, secretary general of the National Council for Sustainable Development at the Ministry of Environment, said it was "regretful" that Trump made a decision to abandon the agreement. "Climate change is real, regardless of what others may say", USA Today quotes Ige as saying. "Tides are getting higher, biodiversity is shrinking, coral is bleaching, coastlines are eroding, weather is becoming more extreme". "Together, we can directly contribute to the global agenda of achieving a more resilient and sustainable island Earth".

Ige signed a separate bill Tuesday establishing a Carbon Farming Task Force, aimed at identifying "agricultural and aquacultural practices to improve soil health and promote carbon sequestration".

Former President Barack Obama and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon shake hands as the US formally joins the Paris climate agreement in 2016.

It also formally states that the goals of the Paris pact are also the state's goals, including keeping global warming at or below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, increasing the ability worldwide to adapt to the consequences of climate change and making financial flows align with low-greenhouse gas goals. This move follows President Donald Trump rescinding USA involvement June 1 in the climate pact, which took a series of 21 meetings for the almost 200 parties to agree on. The United States is now among only three countries globally who have opted to not participate in the accord. But that isn't to say that anyone, much less progressives and anti-Trump activists, should feel happy or enthusiastic about North Korea dunking on POTUS. With Trump pulling out of the agreement, the US will join only two other countries that have not ratified the pact: Syria and Nicaragua.
