Maryland and DC plan to sue Trump over foreign payments

A similar lawsuit was filed in January, but the case from two Democratic attorneys general may stand a better chance in court because it is the first brought by government entities, according to Reuters.

Maryland Attorney General Brian Frosh and his D.C. counterpart, Karl Racine, didn't disclose the focus of the litigation, which they said in a statement they would formally announce Monday afternoon.

The attorneys general of Maryland and the District of Columbia said they will sue President Donald J. Trump on Monday, arguing he has violated a constitutional prohibition on accepting gifts from foreign governments.

The lawsuit will claim that the President, by taking millions of dollars in payments to his businesses, has violated an anticorruption clause in the US Constitution. Each, however, faces legal hurdles over standing to sue the president. Justice Department lawyers also contended that Trump hotel revenue is no an improper payment under the Constitution.

The Embassy of Kuwait held an event at the hotel after initially booking at the Four Seasons.
