Oregon Driver's Licenses to Undergo a Novel Change

Oregon just became first state to allow residents to identify their gender as non-binary on state ID

"It's fitting that this is before us during pride week in OR and pride month around the country".

OR residents will have the option to choose male, female, or "X" for non-binary when applying for driver's licenses or state ID cards.

Gender non-binary residents will soon be able to select "X" for non-specified gender when they apply for their identification cards.

Samus Returns Getting Collector's Edition — Metroid
During Nintendo's E3 2017 Tree House event, the games company unveiled Metroid: Samus Returns for the Nintendo 3DS . But the game has been completely rethought for the new generation.

"As of July 1, residents of OR will be able to eschew the gender binary on state-issued forms of identification by marking the place where they previously would have had to use an "M" for "Male" OR "F" for Female" with an "X", according to a statement from Lambda Legal, a civil rights group that fights for the rights of LGBTQ people in America.

As Elite Daily reported about a year ago, OR was also the first state to legally recognize an individual as a non-binary gender, so this news isn't a total surprise for the liberal state. Drivers can now choose if they're male, female, or x.

"This change in ID is a huge piece of validation for me", J Gibbons, a non-binary, transgender Portland resident told The Guardian. Hopefully, while OR is the first state, it won't be the last - there is some talk that California is also hoping to add another gender.

Lyft joining forces with Jaguar Land Rover in tech venture
The Lyft investment was included as part of the company's most recent round of fundraising , which closed in April. A week ago, Lyft announced it was teaming up with Cambridge, Mass. -based self-driving auto startup nuTonomy .

The commission began considering the change after a state court previous year legally recognized Jamie Shupe's nonbinary gender, making Shupe the first person in the nation to gain this status legally.

"The "X" is in use internationally, and in fact it's a standard recommended by the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators", said David House, a spokesperson for the Oregon Department of Motor Vehicles. Australia and New Zealand offer the option on passports, and India on passports and voter registration cards. "It's something we should do because it's the right thing to do".

"I very much plan to head to the nearest DMV and ask for that ID to be corrected on July 3rd", said Jamie Shupe, an Army veteran who successfully petitioned for the non-binary gender option. Recently, a bill passed through the California House Senate, which would similarly allow for a third gender-neutral option. Judge Amy Holmes Hen ruled that "The sex of Jamie Shupe is hereby changed from female to non-binary".
