'You got the baby?' | Video shows HPD chief rescue stranded residents

Sgt. Steve Perez, 60, died Sunday morning while driving in a patrol auto to his station in downtown Houston.

A veteran police officer drowned in Houston on Sunday after he got trapped in high waters while he was on his way to work.

"This is an individual who was with HPD, Houston's finest, men and women in blue, for 34 years", Mayor Sylvester Turner told reporters. "Sgt. Perez lost his life because he tried to make it happen, he tried to get at his post.that's the ultimate sacrifice", he said. At the news conference, Acevedo became choked up describing Perez as "one of the sweetest people I've ever met".

The department has not released the officer's identity, and the Houston mayor and police chief have said they can not confirm the report. As much as we wanted to recover him last night, we couldn't put other officers at risk in what we knew was going to be a recovery mission.

Acevedo spoke about how Perez's wife and father-in-law implored him not to go into work Sunday.
