USA announces opposition to Iraqi Kurdish independence referendum

Q&A Kirkuk Gov. Najmaldin Karim

"Do not listen to anyone, we are going to go to a referendum", Masoud Barzani said during a campaign for the Kurdish referendum in Duhok Province.

Accordingly, and in the face of bitter opposition from Baghdad, 65 out of 68 lawmakers present voted in favor of the September 25 poll as opposition members boycotted the parliament's first session in two years.

In a statement in Washington, the White House urged Kurdistan Regional Government to call off the referendum and enter into serious and sustained dialogue with Baghdad.

Earlier on Friday, the Iraqi Kurdish parliament approved a plan to hold a referendum on independence on September 25.

Kirkuk has always been the center of dispute between Baghdad and the Kurds, raising the prospect that conflict could erupt between Arabs, Turkmen and Kurds. "As a result, the people of Kurdistan will be given the chance to decide in a binding referendum and in a democratic process if they want independence or to remain as part of Iraq".

The vote was to give a legal framework to the referendum that has also stirred protests from neighboring states, especially Turkey.

2024 and 2028 Olympics to be officially awarded to Paris and LA
The announcement follows the IOC's landmark July decision to award both Summer Olympics simultaneously. Los Angeles City Hall displays the bid colors.

The referendum has been opposed by Baghdad because it would threaten the integrity of Iraq and would distract the ongoing fight against Islamic State militant group by Iraqi forces.

Under this plan, a well-placed source told AFP, the global community will oversee negotiations on revenue sharing in Iraq's oil budget and payment for Kurdish militia fighters. It is clear that the Iraqi authorities can maximally grant a broader autonomy to the Iraqi Kurds seeking independence. It is claimed by both the Kurds and the central government in Baghad.

The Iraqi Kurds fought an on-and-off insurgency for decades against the central government until the United States invasion of Iraq in 2003 enshrined Kurdish autonomy in the Iraqi constitution.
