Amnesty has released a new report, based on the accounts of 58 people on the island. One service provider said refugee children attending Nauruan schools were being hit by teachers and even threatened with machetes by their peers. Amnesty was particularly concerned that serious assaults were occurring with impunity because the Nauru police declined to act. Prime Minister John Key says New Zealand's offer to house refugees from Nauru is to the Australian government only. (more...)
